I once told a friend that making money is easier than getting a job in Kenya. Any Kenyan youth can understand this. What surprises me is how much money job seekers are willing to spend looking for jobs. We search for jobs to make money right? Why spend the same cash you so much need in this game called Job searching? Because looking for employment in most countries is like gambling.
The first question that you need to answer is ; Are you looking for money or looking for a job. If you want a job you don’t even need to look for one. There are many volunteer jobs in your area and from NGOs. If you are looking for money, you aim will be to get something that converts. That is why we are selective when looking for jobs. Because we want activities that can convert our hard work or input into cash.
Turning your effort into cash is something you can do without a permanent job or salary. Sometimes even without an employer. That’s the good side of it. What you need is to be more opportunistic and flexible. Why opportunistic? The fact that everyone is busy looking for profit and salaries, makes the world full of opportunities. A person who runs a profitable business 24/7 will need help with other activities I. e House keeping, catering, delivery, shopping, baby sitting and interior decor.
Take Gigs
Gigs are short term jobs. Although there are freelance sites that offer such jobs, they are quite crowded. Maybe you can start by those that are near you. A house that needs renovation, cars that needs to be cleaned, a tap that needs to be fixed or a company that is running a promotion near your home.
You can also take advantage of peek seasons. During this time companies are looking to employ temporary staff until the season is over. During projects I. e road construction it’s easy to get a quick job.
Earn Tips
A friend is moving and needs help with packing or someone ordered too many items and needs assistance with arrangement. Giving a hand can get you a tip enough to last you for days. It might seem like surviving but you just got paid for a job you did. Right?
Sell second hand items
Resellable goods are another form of assets. Which means they can be converted into liquid money. It can be an old computer, used shoes, an extra phone or a furniture in your house. It also be a piece of land, car or house. Selling one to invest or pay some bills is not a bad idea.
Invest in Shares
One way to make passive income is by investing in shares. You don’t need much. $10 is enough to buy some shares. If you buy them from a young but promising company, they might acquire profit in just a few months.
Host and lend
It’s about using what you have to get what you don’t have. You could be single but have rented a big house. What if you can share that space with someone at a price. If you have a physical address, could be an easy to access store/shop. You can turn it into a pick up point for delivery companies and forwarders.
Save
A coin saved is a coin earned. Everytime you reduce your expenses you save money and the need to look for one. Saving is also a way to earn passive income in form of interest and a good way to have access to loans.
